Guest speakers: Peter & Silvia Allen

Since completing a PDC in 1995 Peter & Silvia have been building a Permaculture demonstration site on what was a 100 year old Cut flower farm in Olinda above Melbourne. The 15 acre property now has over 1000 varieties of fruiting plants from apples- avocadoes. This is all managed by the milking sheep, goats and Llama as well as all the rare breed poultry.

From here they run PDC’s plus classes in Cheese making, Cider & fruit wines, Heritage Fruits classes, Biodynamics and units of the Diploma of PC that Peter partnered Virginia to get started at Eltham College in 2008 just to name a few.

Pete the Permie

Peter was Convenor of Mountain Districts Permaculture Group for 10 years and Silvia for the last 8 years. Peter was also the Convenor of the PcMelb Heritage Fruits Group which has now become the Heritage Fruits Society Inc with Silvia was President, Peter had been running the Petty’s Antique apple festival since 2003 and also the public grafting days all over Melb in winter while Silvia has run the Apple tasting tent there for 10 years with 80-200 varieties to see & taste.

With a background in retail it was inevitable that the nursery would open in 2008 selling 700+ vars of fruit trees at the farm shop and at Farmers Markets.

Peter’s fruit book is in its 3rd edition with 5 more in the process following many trips for research on cool climate and subtropical fruits.

Peter and Silvia will bring some of their bare-rooted fruit trees to sell. The price list will be available on their website in May 2015. Trees will be sold at the Tuggerah Hall during the Information Evening.

If there’s any trees left, they will be available for sale at Jean & Sarah’s place in Lisarow on Wed, 22nd July, in the morning, before Peter and Silvia leave the Central Coast. You can contact Jean through the PCC Contact form here.
