Guest speaker: Wendy Gleen

Growing up in a bushland paradise on the Northern Beaches of NSW Wendy witnessed the gradual disappearance of local wildlife; from Koalas and Gliders to Wrens and Skinks, wild species quietly vanished to be replaced by houses and no one else seemed to notice. This sparked Wendy’s lifelong quest to shine the spotlight on NSW’s most underrated biodiversity. From Senior Keeper of native fauna at Taronga Zoo to her current role as Support Officer with Lake Macquarie City Council Landcare, Wendy loves to find and tell stories from the local wildscape – from tales of grand ecosystem processes to the tiny vital lives of our smallest species. She has a Masters in Ecology (by research) and lives in the middle of the Watagan Mountains where she spends as much time as possible observing the local flora and fauna.

Like Permaculture, Landcare is both a movement and a practice and it also has a common goal – the preservation of a healthy self-sustaining planet. I will talk about what we do at Landcare, with biodiversity as my main theme. I will illustrate the many aspects of biodiversity by drawing on my experiences from a life devoted to the conservation of local flora and fauna; from ecosystem monsters to my love affair with a small Potoroo, there is a wide and entertaining scope to cover. I will talk about how to maximize the biodiversity values of your own permaculture garden and hope to deepen your perspective of its’ importance in the wider landscape.
