Information Evening – Fruit fly

Fruit fly on a leaf
26/02/2019

Guest Speaker: Andrew Jessup

Andrew started working on developing quarantine treatments against fruit flies, codling moth, light brown apple moth and Fuller’s rose weevil with NSWDPI in 1984. In 1988 he commenced setting up a Sterile Insect Release program in South East Australia for the eradication/ suppression of Queensland fruit fly in collaboration with DPI Victoria and then with PIRSA, South Australia. In 1993 he started evaluating the rearing and mass-release of parasitoid wasps for the biological control of Queensland fruit fly. By 1997 his R&D included fruit fly population monitoring and field control using traps, baits and cover sprays.

From 2008 to 2011 he was seconded to the Food and Agricultural Organisation / International Atomic Energy Agency (FAO/IAEA) in Austria managing international fruit fly pre- and post-harvest R&D programs such as the sterile insect technique, mass-trapping of fruit flies and developing quarantine treatments. In 2011 he returned to NSWDPI to further develop post-harvest quarantine schedules for market access and pre-harvest area-wide management fruit fly management strategies.

In early 2016 Andrew became a consultant in fruit fly management and a fruit fly educator assisting horticultural growers, exporters, regions and communities in pre- and post-harvest pest management and market access.

If you bring a PET bottle and $2 in cash, Andrew will help you to make a fruit fly trap.
