Brett and Jennie Jones invite you to visit Pickles Patch in November for a chat on Aquaponics, what it is, what it is not and how we do it.

Brett will be giving a tour of his aquaponics setup and giving a talk on aquaponics in general. There will also be time for questions and answers at the end of the talk.

Their system is built on a tight budget and installed in a semi permanent way in a small rental backyard. He will explain how they did it on a small budget and what he would do differently if the situation was more permanent and the budget larger. He will also talk about the changes he has made to bring the system more in alignment with permaculture principles and what he would like to improve in the future.

Brett has completed an introductory course and a PDC with Permacoach. He did work on permaculture properties in his teens and twenties and occasionally worked with Bill Mollison on those properties in the late seventies and early eighties in Middle Dural / Galston area. That early experience ‘programmed’ him to view things he did according to how it incorporated with, and enhanced, the environment around it. Nothing is waste and everything is an opportunity.

8 years ago he set up his first very simple aquaponics system in their garden and has been expanding on and improving it ever since. His long term goal with aquaponics is to take what is a very ‘industrial’ way of growing plants and fish and make it adhere to permaculture principles.
