Guest speaker: John Powell

This month’s speaker is John Powell from Woy Woy Peninsula Community Garden (WWPCG). John has been on the garden team at WWPCG for 10 years. He first learned of Hügelkultur after reading about it online and then completing a Hügelkultur bed as a project whilst on an “Introduction to Permaculture” course. After implementing a number of Hügelkultur beds around the community garden in bed, mound and container form, this is now the preferred method of garden bed (versus wicking beds). Its benefits include:

  • no/low cost
  • all natural materials
  • carbon storing
  • good water retention.

John says that “Wicking beds whilst good but more likely to fail, and use plastic sheeting which will need to be disposed one day”

Amenities

  • No toilets. There are shops nearby with toilet facilities at Woy Woy.
  • Parking: on the street
