Before putting a single spade in the ground or planting a solitary tree, every resilient permaculture design begins with observation. Site and sector analysis is the foundational exercise that transforms a piece of land from a blank canvas into an interconnected, energy-efficient ecosystem.
Rather than imposing an arbitrary design onto a landscape, site and sector analysis allows you to read the land, map the unseen forces moving across it, and design with nature rather than fighting against it.
Why Site and Sector Analysis is Essential
In permaculture, energy efficiency and natural harmony are paramount. Skipping this initial assessment almost guarantees wasted labour, lost plants and unnecessary expense down the road.
- Energy Harvesting & Management: It allows you to catch and store free energy (like solar heat, harvested rainwater, or gentle breezes) while deflecting or buffering destructive forces (such as frost pockets, bushfire vectors, flooding, or harsh gale winds).
- Work Reduction: By placing elements in response to natural flows, you let the environment do the heavy lifting—reducing the need for artificial heating, cooling, irrigation, and windbreaks.
- Microclimate Optimization: Every site has distinct micro-environments. Identifying hot spots, shade zones, damp hollows, and exposed ridges ensures plants and structures are placed where they will thrive naturally.
How to Conduct a Site and Sector Analysis
1. Create a Scaled Base Map (The Fixed Site): Step 1.
Start by mapping the physical boundary of the site. Mark all fixed, immovable features: existing structures, property lines, access roads, large mature trees, slope contours, water bodies, and soil variations. This forms the static framework of your design.
2. Map the Sector Energies (The Wild Vectors): Step 2.
Sectors represent wild energies that originate outside your site and pass through it. Draw directional arrows or wedge sectors across your base map to identify:
• Sun Angles: Summer and winter solstice paths, sunrise/sunset arcs, and shadow projections.
• Wind Patterns: Prevailing seasonal winds, cold winter blasts, and hot summer breezes.
• Water Flows: Surface runoff paths, flood zones, and natural drainage channels.
• External Threats & Views: Fire risk directions, noisy roads, unpleasant views, or privacy concerns.
3. Identify Microclimates and Topography: Step 3.
Walk the land at different times of day and across seasons. Record differences in temperature, soil moisture, frost accumulation, and air drainage. A low point that collects cold air forms a frost pocket, while a north-facing masonry wall creates a warm microclimate perfect for tender species.
4. Synthesise and Overlay Zones: Step 4.
Overlay your sector map with your zone planning (Zones 0 through 5 based on frequency of visit). Position your design elements so they interact intelligently with sector forces: place windbreaks to block harsh gales, position solar panels or greenhouses in unshaded winter sun sectors, and place rain catchment along high-elevation runoff pathways.
The Golden Rule
Design elements should perform multiple functions, and every crucial function should be supported by multiple elements. A well-executed sector analysis ensures that wild energy is converted into a net asset for your system.
By taking the time to observe and map both site features and wild sector energies, you turn potential hazards—like scorching afternoon sun or driving winds—into useful design inputs that yield a self-sustaining, abundance-generating site.
